DEPCOMM’s FEU Film Society alumni and officers part of Nora Aunor’s CineFilipino film
Alumni and officers of the FEU Film Society were given the chance to work with none other than Ms. Nora Aunor, the premier actress in the country today, for her film Ang Kwento ni Mabuti directed by Mes de Guzman. An entry to the 1st CineFilipino Film Festival sponsored by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), the film will have its screening from September 18-24 at Gateway Mall, Shangri-La Mall, and Resorts World Manila.
Filmed on location in Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya, the FEU Film Society spent more than a month learning not only from Ms. Nora Aunor, and other actors such as Sue Prado, Arnold Reyes, and Mara Lopez, but also with award-winning filmmaker, Mes de Guzman, cinematographer, Albert Banzon, and industry stalwart Cesar Hernando in bringing to life the story of a local healer (Aunor), who stumbles upon a huge amount of money and is confused on what to do with it, relying only on her good morals to dictate the actions she would take.
FEU Film Society alumni Vircent Labrador was 2nd unit camera operator, while Philip Quintos acted as editor and Charmagne Vidallon as assistant director. Meanwhile, current officers and members like Joseph Ronquillo acted as the film’s gaffer, Rochelle Crisostomo, Maine Belen, Jovie Ann Rose Concepcion and Andy Plan took care of the film’s production design. Additional editing credits was done by Chino Villagracia, sound recording by Jasper Valencia, and stills by John Van Medrano.

DEPCOMM's Seymour Sanchez's film to compete in Greece
Seymour Sanchez’s “Patron ng Laging Saklolo” is a short documentary of enduring patterns of patronage politics in the Philippines, chronicling the activities throughout a typical election season. By examining the fiesta mentality of Filipinos and their attitudes towards politics, several gripping comparisons will be drawn.
Patras International Film Festival, as it is also called, will be held “at a time particularly critical both at the economic and political front,” festival director Chionidis Panagiotis said. “At times of social crisis, the need to bring society closer to culture becomes more imperative.”
“The Festival welcomes art creations that reflect upon the problems, struggles and hopes of the individual and society as a whole,” Panagiotis added.
Sanchez also has a Palanca tucked under his belt, winning the grand prize for his screenplay “Hiwaga” in 2009. He currently teaches film, journalism, broadcasting, and other communication subjects at the Far Eastern University and the College of the Holy Spirit in Manila. He attended the Produire au Sud workshop under the World Film Festival of Bangkok.

Docu film of Ms. Veronica Santiago won Best Documentary in DLSU film competition
"Banat ni Balagtas" by graduating Mass Communication student Ma. Veronica Santiago was awarded Best Documentary in the Indie Un-Film 2012 annual interschool digital film competition held at the De La Salle University (DLSU).
The award comes just a few months after Ms. Santiago's “Awit ni Maria” landed on 2nd place in the Short Feature Category of the prestigious Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video.
"Banat ni Balagtas" focuses on rap battles or freestyle rapping, which has been popular in the US for many years.
"Living in a dog-eat-dog world, Filipinos are open to many influences. Rap battles or freestyle rapping has come to our shores and it has decided to stay. Young and old alike, there are many of us getting hooked to this foreign type of communication. The clever craftsmanship behind every line and the cheers and boos that come afterwards are all part of the ‘high’ that makes freestyle rapping a force to be reckoned with in the face of Filipino society," according to the film's synopsis.
The film was a final project submitted by Ms Santiago to her Investigative Reporting class and originally 30 minutes long. She re-edited it in order to comply with the requirements set by the film competition.
"I was born in a musically inclined family and that is one of the reasons why I pushed through with this topic. I want to show that music is not only about melody, rhythm and rhyme. It involves heart, determination and passion."
Other members of the production crew include Alexander Fabila (Production Manager) and Paolo Bonilla (2nd Camera Operator), while FEU alumnus Jet Leyco served as technical consultant.

Far Eastern University Department of Communication Upgrades to HD Production with Broadcast Pix Granite
Billerica, Massachusetts – February 28, 2012 - Broadcast Pix™ today announced that the Department of Communication at Far Eastern University (FEU) in Manila, Philippines, recently renovated its video production facilities with a Granite™ 1000 Video Control Center. The new Broadcast Pix system is part of an upgrade to HD production for FEU’s television production
classes.
While Granite has been primarily used for class productions, there are plans to produce a live cable broadcast during the upcoming semester. According to Babsie Morabe, associate professor, FEU Department of Communication, students like the new
system, which replaced an aging Videonics switcher. “The industry is moving toward HD production ,” he noted, “and the
students need to be armed so that when they apply for a production job, they are already well versed in HD.”
Located in the Arts Building, the new production studio is housed in a space that had been previously used as a stockroom.
Solid Video Corporation in Makati City, Philippines, supplied and installed the Granite system, and FEU began using it for
classes in 2011. The upgrade also included new Sony HD cameras in the studio and HD control room monitors.
Budget was a primary consideration in choosing Broadcast Pix, but Morabe said the university’s technical team was also
impressed by its functionality. For example, FEU relies on Fluent-View™, Broadcast Pix’s built-in, customizable multi-view to provide images and status information for cameras, clips, graphics, and key layers. “We don’t need a lot of monitors
anymore,” Morabe explained. “It’s very efficient.”
Morabe also praised the other integrated tools, including the Harris Inscriber GS CG. “It is a very powerful tool for video
mixing and live broadcast integration,” he added. “It greatly improved our productions, since we can come up with real-time graphics anytime."
About Broadcast Pix Broadcast Pix is the leader in live video production systems. Its Video Control Centers™ empower
operators with patented techniques that combine cameras, clips and graphics to create compelling live video. The integration of a multi-format switcher, clip store, graphics system with a Harris or Chyron CG, and device controls provides the lowest cost of ownership at a fraction of the cost of a conventional control room to buy, staff and operate. Systems range from compact systems controlled by a touch-screen or voice-automation to sophisticated 2 M/E control panels. Customers include leading broadcast, corporate, education, religious, government, webcast, entertainment and mobile studios in more than 110 countries.

Communication alumnus earns honor for health documentary
Mass Communication alumnus Donnie Sacueza won the Jury Award for his documentary "The Mother" (Ang Ina) in the 2nd Quisumbing-Escandor Film Festival for Health (QEFF 2).
The awarding ceremony held last February 20 at the Philippine International Convention Center and was organized by the Mu Sigma Phi fraternity of the UP College of Medicine.
Produced and directed by Sacueza, "The Mother" depicts the current situation of maternal and child health in the Philippines. The film was backed by DTS CREATIVES Advertising and Productions in cooperation with TIANSHI Philippines Inc. and Department of Health.
“The Mother” is the 10th film of Donnie Sacueza and adds to his list of award-winning films that includes Lawa ng Bae, Bamboo Lake, Adam's Family, Marco and Telebisyon.
Organizers of the QEFF 2 said the featured films aim to help increase public awareness and understanding of the Reproductive Health bill.
"The power of cinema was harnessed so that health advocacy would be far reaching, stirring and stimulating to initiate action," according to an official statement.
“The Mother” is a must-see for all students, health practitioners and all authorities in the health sector.
